10 Tips to help you succeed in family mediation

If you want mediation to work for you follow these tips as you prepare yourself.

  1. Have courage– you will need courage as you embark on a new journey through the mediation process, full of uncertainties but also possibilities
  1. Commit yourself– the mediation journey will not necessarily be easy but it will be worthwhile
  1. Do you research– build your confidence by finding out from the mediator what is in store . There are some great websites and the mediator should be able to signpost you to some great mediation resources.
  1. Take your time– Take your time to reassure yourself that mediation is the right choice for you.
  1. Ask lots of questions– Ask questions rather than make assumptions about what you think might be involved.
  1. Keep an open mind– When everything is so new, keep an open mind and avoid getting stuck on a position.
  1. Consider what your ex partner might be feeling and needs– This doesn’t mean you have to give them what they want. What they think is fair might not agree with what you think is fair for a variety of valid reasons.
  1. Seek to understand before asking to be understood– Listen to what your ex partner wants before making your own demands. You might be surprised.
  1. Manage your emotions– Try to avoid reacting. Try to manage your emotional responses if possible so your brain can function properly.
  1. Prepare properly– Use the mediation intake meeting with the mediator on your own to prepare yourself properly for the mediation.

By doing this and more, you stand a much better chance of succeeding in mediation and saving yourself a small fortune in legal fees.

Good luck
