You CAN teach an old dog new tricks but there is a 4 step learning process to follow.
You cannot avoid it!
- Unconscious incompetence
- Conscious incompetence
- Conscious competence
- Unconscious competence
To understand this process, remember when you learned to drive.
We can all remember when we first got into the car! We didn’t know what we didn’t know. ‘Watch out pedestrians, here I come’.
We were most definitely unconsciously incompetent.
After a few lesson, we fairly quickly became consciously incompetent. It was all a little clunky but we could safely get from a to b.
After practice and driving our parents to the pub a few times, we gradually became consciously competent (or at least we thought so), the level at which we past our test ( for the first time, in my case 🙂 ).
Now, after so many years of doing the same thing, over and over again, we have programmed our brains to drive without thinking! Sounds terrifying, I know but our brains do this so that they can free themselves up to learn new tricks.
The neural motorway is now in place and doing its job.
So, if you want to learn new strategies to communicate or you want to learn to respond more positively to stressful situations, decide what changes you need to make and start making them. Be decisive!
But, like learning to drive, you first need to find a big enough reason to change.
You need to find your Mojo, your motive for action (motivation).
Take responsibility and make the changes today.
Good luck
